SENATE GOP STANDS STRONG AGAINST PAY RAISES
Senate Democrats have failed Michigan residents by opposing legislation that would save state taxpayers $77.3 million. Instead of voting for the measure that would freeze a three percent pay increase for unionized public employees, Democrats called on legislators to raise taxes. A similar three percent freeze in pay raises has already been put in place for non-union employees of the state.
"We spent the better part of an hour debating whether or not we have money to do certain things. One of those is a pay increase for employees, and I responded very simply by saying no we can't. It's very obvious we can't," Senator Mike Bishop said yesterday during his comments on the floor of the Senate.
"We can't pass out pay increases, while we're forced to make cuts to public education, local government and law enforcement," Bishop said. "It just doesn't make sense, it does not sit well with me and I do not support it."

BISHOP: NO THANKS, NOT MY STYLE Lansing's "Political Elite" Back Schuette, Bishop Remains Focused on Grassroots
Today, Senator Mike Bishop, candidate for Attorney General, responded to the recent survey conducted by the Capitol Caucus, in which "Lansing's political elite" named Bishop's GOP opponent as their favorite for the Attorney General nomination:
"We know that the Lansing insiders are more about protecting the status quo. Special interests have agendas that don't always match up with what's best for the citizens of Michigan. During my career, I've always put the people of Michigan first. Maybe that's why the "insiders" would like to see someone else ascend to statewide office."
"I will remain focused on the people of Michigan and not the Lansing insiders. That's what we're sent here to do. If I ruffle a few feathers, so be it. I will keep my commitment to stand up for a more conservative form of state government that protects the taxpayers."
"The reality is that polling continues to show that those who live outside of the Lansing bubble support my candidacy and show a victory for me in November."

BISHOP: PAY TO VOTE STRAW POLLS NOT AN EFFECTIVE USE OF CAMPAIGN FUNDS
Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop in December that his campaign for Attorney General will not be participating in pay for vote straw polls.
"While I recognize that this has been a innovative way for local party organizations to raise money, candidate campaign funds can be much better spent to actually win the office a candidate is seeking," Bishop said.
Straw polls are not an indicator of a candidate’s strength. Some campaigns have been spending thousands of dollars in an effort to basically stack the deck for their candidate. This practice led to controversy following the Republican straw poll on Mackinac Island.
"My campaign is going very well and I will continue to reach out to Republican delegates and voters across Michigan,” Bishop concluded. Bishop said his campaign will continue to participate financially and in other forms of local party activities.
